Hoodia Gordonii Propagation

Hoodia Gordonii is a groundbreaking dietary supplement for people who are trying to loose weight. The wide popularity of this naturally occurring cactus type succulent plant that grows in the deep forests of Kalahari in South Africa has also resulted in a threat to Hoodia Gordonii propagation. The demand for this cactus is far more than the supplies and if the trend continues at the present rate, there is a strong possibility that Hoodia Gordonii propagation (natural reproduction of the species) will eventually become extinct. In order to maintain a balance between supply and demand of this revolutionary plant, the government of South Africa in conjunction with CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) has come up with restrictions on the unlimited consumption of the plant.

Hoodia Gordonii propagation has become an important issue because of plant’s reputation as a pure natural appetite suppressant leading to weight loss management qualities. The properties of wonderful Hoodia have led a lot of individuals and pharmaceutical companies to exploit the plant for commercial purposes.

Because Hoodia Gordonii propagation is threatened and cultivation is limited, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) has placed all Hoodia species, not just Hoodia Gordonii, on a list known as Appendix II in January of 2005. Appendix II is a list of species, which may not be threatened now but have the potential to become threatened if the utilization is not controlled at present time.

The primary goal of CITES is to protect Hoodia Gordonii propagation in the wild and propagation of the other species, as well. In South Africa, nobody is allowed to harvest Hoodia Gordonii plants or seeds without a valid permit. In essence, special permits are required to trade or export Hoodia Gordonii plants or seeds in raw or processed forms. These timely restrictions will ensure the continual survival of all Hoodia species for the benefit of everyone.
